For Alexis, Easter Seals Camp Squamish was more than just a childhood memory. It was the first place where she truly felt accepted, celebrated, and free to be herself. At camp, she discovered a sense of belonging that she had never experienced before, surrounded by people who saw her for who she was and encouraged her to thrive.
As a child with a disability, camp provided Alexis with the opportunity to try many leisure activities that are often not accessible. She paddled a canoe for the first time, soared through the air on a giant swing, and sang songs by the campfire with new friends. The sweet, gooey combination of melted marshmallows and chocolate in her s’mores remains one of her most treasured memories.
Camp was also her first time being away from her family for a significant time, learning to navigate new social situations, and building the courage to talk to strangers and feel comfortable in public spaces. These experiences helped shape her character and showed her that she could overcome challenges and embrace new opportunities. Alexis has approached new experiences with enthusiasm, trying activities like horseback riding on the beach in Mexico and participating in White Rock’s Polar Bear Swim.
“Everyone is encouraged to be themselves, free from judgment. For me, it taught me to embrace life, build meaningful friendships, and understand that no matter who we are, we are all equal.”
That belief in herself stayed with her as she grew up. Today, Alexis is a passionate volunteer and advocate, dedicating her time to more than 40 community events every year. She inspires others, including her friend with autism, by introducing them to new experiences, like FlyOver Canada and The Capilano Suspension Bridge, and showing them that they, too, belong in the world. Her journey has even taken her to the stage, where she proudly represents inclusion as Ms. Canada Plus Global United.
“I never imagined myself as a titleholder without support from Easter Seals when I was young.” Alexis says with gratitude.
The safe and inclusive environment at camp laid the foundation for her to embrace challenges and grow into the confident, compassionate leader she is today.
As an adult, Alexis dreams of returning to camp—not as a camper, but as a leader-in-training or volunteer. She wants to give back to the place that gave her so much and create that same sense of belonging for a new generation of campers.
Easter Seals Camps, like Camp Squamish, continue to change lives for children and young adults with disabilities across British Columbia.
